Max Control Tuner is a guitar tuner for Android.
Equal temperament applied to a guitar sounds fine on the open strings, but can sound a little dissonant in places further up the neck. The height of the strings above the neck, the gauge of the strings and the pressure of your own hand pull the real notes away from the theory. Sweetened tunings aim for a more harmonious sound by shifting the tuning by a few hundredths of a semitone (cents). This app applies those shifts string by string — a sweetened low E and a sweetened high E call for different corrections even though both are E.
Sweetened tunings depend on the instrument — string gauge, string clearance over the neck, short or long scale — and on how you play. Build your own by setting the number of strings, the note each one targets, and the offset in cents for each. You can share your tunings as a QR code.
Features
- The usual alternate tunings, from Drop D to seven-string sets
- Three displays — vintage needle, LED meter and strobe — swipe to change; turn the phone sideways and the meter fills the screen
- Reference pitch adjustable from 415 to 466 Hz, with a test tone to set it by ear and a warning whenever you are not at 440
- The app uses the microphone to hear the instrument. It does not use the internet and has no advertising.
